I wouldn't be so sure.  Perry's got his own fan base; Patterson fans are legion.  If anything, this thing has been calculated to death for maximum profit.
Not saying that it doesn't suck, but it certainly will make money.  And probably sequels.  Something both Perry and Patterson are equally fond of riding to the bank.

I was just composing a post on how the horror is what hooked me, but I lost interest before the Season of Mists arc.  The increasing variety totally threw me at first, because it was (deliberately) not like what I had started out with.  I wonder if this is a similar problem for many potential fans.

Initially I would have agreed, as I was looking for more Ged, more wizardry, more world-building.  Tomb felt, well, tomb-like.  Entrapping.  Myopic.  It forces the reader to adopt the POV of the cult/religion.
