Ah well, I thought it was touching. If the character's relationship was chaste, it would reduce the story to a bland "kids rule, adults drool" dynamic.

People who get upset over that scene are wound a little too tight, in my opinion.

What is a "crosshatch shot"?

I always figured that it meant unrequited love, or someone who dumped you, not just that your significant other is out of town. In that case it means to move on with your life and try to share happiness with someone who is actually available. In that case it seems like pretty good advice.
