While Breakfast of Champions is excellent, part of the reason it's excellent is all the references to other Vonnegut books - it sort of ties all his stuff together, so it's not something I'd read first.

Cat's Cradle is pretty fucking great, but go with Slaughterhouse Five. Seriously. It's probably his best work, no matter what anyone says

Nah, the footnotes are fantastic - this is coming from someone who has read House of Leaves three times, mind you, so take that with a grain of salt.
