It kind of makes sense to hear that one first to get a sense of the pop and the ambient.  You can kind of procede based on which side you like best.

I haven't read Against the day, but Mason & Dixon is really fun.  It is written in a weird old timey pastiche that takes a bit to get used to.  Once you get comfortable with the style, though, it's pretty damn breezy.

I liked the Spiderland one.  The story about a young devil-locked Will Oldham entertaining Danzig with cerebral palsy impressions is exactly the kind of rock and roll demystification I want.
