I was trying to think of those books just this morning!  I also loved how they grew organically and follwed a very natural progression of how girls and their relationships change.

Dear Mr. Henshaw was the first book that made me really sad.  Like down to my guts.  All the dad stuff of course but especially the part with his mom putting leftover catering goodies in his lunch that would get stolen.  It really upset me.
