The game mechanics are a bit more mature. Ferries require at least one locomotive to use; Tunnels have a "chance" element; and stations make for strategic play latter in the game.

The thing about Ticket To Ride Europe is you can start with the American rules and then add the new rules (I think there are 5; including stations) bit by bit.
