I don't remember much about it except James Gandolfini, Susan Sarandon, Kate Winslet, and someone else (Mary-Louise Parker, maybe?) all singing in someone's front yard, angry with each other. That scene may not have actually happened, but that's how I want to remember it.
EDIT: Also, I didn't know it was a musical when

Your comment implies one must make a choice between hedonism and authoritarianism; your "or should I only" means there's no middle ground. Stein is frustrated that adults are only doing things they find personally amusing. Mature adults

@avclub-a1967e6de4ca99fb2635d94b99453928:disqus I agree that it's immature to read a work of literature just to get through it, or, worse, just to say you've read it. I'm not advocating that. I agree that at some point, it's worth abandoning something if you don't think you get it, or if you don't think you're getting

You have to start somewhere. He is "trying to get into classical music." He didn't say it's better than rock, but he heard that it's good stuff and wants to give it a shot. What's the problem?

False dilemma is false.

If you spend all your time consuming entertainment (Saved by the Bell), you are spending less time investing in expanding your worldview

Actually, being an adult does have something to do with the "pop culture you consume," just as eating unhealthy McDonald's every day means that you don't have any room in your body for anything nutritious. A 30-year old who has spent 3 hours every day of their life reading the top 500 greatest books of literature is

That's not fair. When he says he wants an inflexible definition of "adulthood," it's clear he means he wants an inflexible definition of "maturity" or "mature adulthood." He's using "adulthood" in contrast with "immature young adulthood," he just hasn't spent enough time considering his argument to articulate it
