The character in that still kinda looks like WALL-E. At least the eyes do.

I'm sure Mr Tobias knows his Ozu. But even if Millenium Actress is loosely based on Setsuko Hara, I don't think he's required to mention it.

Judging by the comments here, you won't be disappointed. Sounds like there's a lot of hate for Perfect Blue, but not for Millenium Actress.

I heard this was based on Setsuko Hara, but that might only go as far as "Setsuko Hara was in a lot of movies, and she withdrew from public life after being involved in films." Maybe she never married?

Paprika was reviewed on the AV Club. I'd say it's the least accessible of Satoshi Kon's work. As someone who was turned off from anime by "big-eyed schoolgirls getting raped by tentacle monsters," I'm glad I started Satoshi Kon with Millenium Actress rather than Perfect Blue. Tokyo Godfathers is also a good place

Satoshi Kon has 4 movies and 1 series on Netflix, and they're all worth seeing: Paranoia Agent, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika, Millenium Actress, Perfect Blue.

Biggest Last-Weekend-Of-April Opener Ever
I will forget that this movie exists in less than one week.

Truman Show got me too, it's okay.

The violins in 12 Monkeys really hit you too.

No one does southern rock plus something else anymore
I hope Billy Bob Thornton can make the transition from music to film as well as Will Smith.

Planet Earth
Was Planet Earth ever reviewed on the AVClub? Can't find it in the archives.

Agreed.

I also like actual real movies and enjoyed Shoot Em Up. I felt like a kid watching it; it was funny and reminded me of the movie-within-a-movie of Last Action Hero. I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much without Paul Giamatti and Clive Owen.

Gah, wish I had seen this earlier. Anna Faris was the producer of "The House Bunny," so I think she has pretty good opportunities to shape the course of her career.

No.

"It's Ernie Hudson!"

Hey, I liked eXistenZ, and it definitely has a step up on the cast of the Matrix, but The Matrix really had the best action sequences. Plus, eXistenZ is kind of a Videodrome rip-off.

Yeah! Thirteenth Floor on Blu-Ray. That reminds me, I have to drive out to the middle of nowhere one of these days.

The GLBT crowd had a good week last week though with Iowa and Vermont. I imagine it's going to take more than Amazon to bring em down.

I didn't really like this either, but I will admit that the disturbing images are the best part.
