I cain't believe it took this long into the comments to see someone mention the Dukes of Hazard Co.

That's fucking perfect.

Cliff Huxtable even had that big Temple University logo on his office wall.  If I remember correctly, they even mentioned the colleges that Cliff went to in one episode, and Temple was not one of them.  That logo was on the wall because Cosby was an alumnus.

Well, TV sitcom-family income had to rise during the 1980s and 1990s, right?  I mean, if one of TV's biggest duties is to distract the masses from how badly they're getting fucked by the top 1%, then the reality of widening income inequality and lack of upward mobility becomes a primary thing that must be disguised on

Seriously, there was a point, I can't remember exactly when, but there was a point at which Rory came to some kind of realization that things with Logan were getting serious, and that he was not the kind of guy that she thought she liked (he was arrogant, lazy, fairly untalented beyond spending huge sums of money), so

I like a lot of things about that show, but the economic situation of all the characters really takes me out of it.  I'm willing to blame this on my own class resentments and not so much on the show (which is just trying to tell funny stories about a certain, idealized [or caricatured] segment of the American

@avclub-8c1bbcea199457b63dc39f7a024591f1:disqus , so is daycare.  If you're working and sending your kids to daycare, your entire paycheck might be going to pay for the daycare.  At that point, you have to ask if the job is worth it.  If you're a degreed professional trying to get your career back on track, it might

The only thing I really miss from the "Wild West" days when registration was optional is that now we don't get some of the really creative and inspired temporary usernames that people would come up with that were often a witty response to another's post in and of themselves.

By the way, I want the record to show that I do not agree with those around here who are claiming that Call the Midwife isn't good.  It's great, and you people are crazy!  The sets are wonderful, the costumes are impeccable, the characters are drawn lovingly and they all have their own distinct voices and senses of

I prefer hamburger phones, myself.

Oh, it exists.  It might just not have been uploaded to the internet yet…

I believe that in olden times, and maybe still in the UK, you can see names like that written with an M'.  So, the guy from Trainspotting who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequels could have his name as Ewan McGregor, Ewan MacGregor, or Ewan M'Gregor.  I'm sure this sort of thing was more common in eras before

THIS DESERVES FAR MORE THAN 15 MEASLY 'LIKES,' YOU STUPID LITTLE FUCKERS!

I must have missed the post or comment where @avclub-1b1f9a3e639ecc53f335314fc9d8403b:disqus  and @Scrawler2:disqus  first threw down, so all I want to say is that both of you make a valuable contribution to this site.  Scrawler, as I said elsewhere, you initiate a lot of good and thoughtful conversations around

I really like this formula: "I think I can accept [X] as a part of modern existence without actually liking it."  Of course all of us will have different places where we draw that line, but it's good to remember that so many things we encounter in our lives are not an all-or-nothing proposition.

@avclub-3be42d8a3412057f79af152555e39bd4:disqus , now you're saying what's in my mind better than I could.  I've never quite understood why porn would be, in and of itself, sexist.  Saying that porn is sexist simply because it appeals to close-to-the-surface sexual desires of most straight men is like saying that

@avclub-3be42d8a3412057f79af152555e39bd4:disqus , not just Britain, but the poorest, mildewiest, most blighted, most TB-infested part of post-war Blighty!  At least they had the National Health and caring nurses and midwives.

@Chryso42:disqus , the vast majority of human males are very grateful to you and those like you.

You do the thinking, I'll do the talking.  We'll make millions!

No worries, @Scrawler2:disqus .  You launch some of the best discussions around here.  Just because some people disagree with you doesn't mean that (1) they're right, or (2) we don't like what you have to say.
