I saw Crimson Peak in IMAX and it left my mind about thirty seconds after leaving the theater. The visuals were clearly the whole point of making the movie, but the one thing that I've thought of since is Chastain's performance. It was excellent and totally against type, not something I really thought she had in her.

To be fair, Gaiman makes words, not pictures. You can visualize his words however you like. I think I know what you mean though, even if I do like Gaiman in general.
Of course "steadily increased in star power" from movie 1 to movie 3 would imply that movie 2 reflected such an increase, but that's not what happened. Of course, when listing famous people from the director's movies, Ben Whishaw and Lea Seydoux would get mentioned but Rachel Weisz would not.
