Not sure if this is still up for discussion, but I'm curious as to how you feel something like Herzog's "Into the Abyss" falls on this spectrum? It's mostly interviews and pretty sparse stylistically, but (to me at least) succeeded in creating a great deal of emotion and an overall tone.

The story surrounding this film is tragic and awful, but the film itself is edited in the most awful, choppy, frenetic way. I turned it off after about 2 minutes. Terrible filmmaking, great story.
