To balance the positive opinions here, I'll say I sort of liked the first book at the beginning, but I dropped it after a while because I thought it was way too self important and heavy handed. At the same time I thought it was a shame because I liked the world building.

I utterly agree with your first point. That's actually why some of Miller's stuff, for example, has always felt more childish to me than, for example, JLU. Worse than childish actually : teenagy…. (shudders…)
