Yes, you nailed it. Though I did laugh at some parts of that episode. Season 9 is when the show became inconsistent, and more offensive for the sake of offending rather than being actually funny.

It sounds like one of the problems you guys had with his death is that it happened on a show that typically defies prediction. It was semi building up to this moment and instead of going in some other unexpected direction, the show delivered on exactly what it was suggesting would occur.
