One of the few things Michael O'Donoghue wrote for the show that season (before he was fired for comparing the show to "watching old men die" in The New York Times) was the monologue for Chase's appearance, which began "Right after I stopped doing cocaine, I turned into a giant garden slug, and, for the life of me, I

I can vouch for them working well on paper - I found a paperback collection of his commentaries at a library sale a couple of years ago and I cherish it.  It's great stuff.

I'd love to see that myself, but I would think that some archaeologist-grade digging would be necessary to even find clips of the thing.  I know, 'cause I tried. I did find some nice pottery shards, though. I believe Fox hired them to replace Joan Rivers.

There's good stuff buried in there (like every season), but overall, it was the first time I could watch that show, think "I could do better than that," and know that I was right.  It's kind of fascinating watching the deterioration as the season went on - by the time they got to the last few shows (the Deion Sanders

According to Tim Meadows on "The Nerdist" podcast, there was definitely some improv involved - if I remember correctly, they threw him in the sketch at the last minute without any lines and he ad-libbed the whole "I can do the Robot" thing on-air; even Will Ferrell (who rarely broke character or gave into giggles;

Given the level of humor in this show, I was slightly shocked that an actual pearl necklace figured into the plotline.

I have it on good authority that VanDerWerff suffered a psychotic break around the time of the first-season finale and that this "critic" is in fact an alternate personality existing solely to compartmentalize the shame and self-loathing brought on by the sick, single-minded obsession that compels him to watch every

Funniest line in that entire series (which I happen to adore).

Listening to the soundtrack right now (excellent, btw) - you may have mistaken Emmylou Harris for Hersh.  Which is something I'd never in my life imagine saying, but Harris actually does kinda sound like Hersh here if you're listening with that in mind.
