Iced Earth suggests a similar, but more hilarious cocktail.

Vampire Weekend = 1 PBR served cold.

That's fantastic.

I'll second @TheOkayestGeneration:disqus . HBW isn't nearly as good as W-UB for my taste. I started with Wind-Up Bird and didn't have any trouble getting into it. I think the idea that you have to start somewhere is a little odd. Just read the good ones. This isn't college; there are no pre-reqs.

You don't think real-life success and the details of getting it are more interesting than anecdotes about bad dates?

All girls' names look the same to me.

I don't know @avclub-ce6c92303f38d297e263c7180f03d402:disqus , that that's such a great metric either. I mean, if a book sets out to be a piece of shit and succeeds, is that really an A? At least some of the grade has to be a measure of its absolute quality, whatever that means.

I know what you mean. Both about the mood sticking with you, and about the well appearing in my thoughts frequently.

Though, to be fair, the review is for this particular translation. So it's valid to critique the style, even if it doesn't match the original. I, for one, am not going to be reading this in Japanese. And if the English version isn't good, I won't like it.

Superfrog Saves Tokyo is a fine story.

I don't have a problem translating idiom, or substituting unfamiliar mythologies with familiar ones. I understand if you have some special knowledge of Japanese language and culture you might get more out of a more literal translation, but there's not a wide audience for that.

I don't know why you need the swipe at Americans there. It's not like high-brow literature is a booming industry anywhere.

When you put it that way, it sounds like a pretty bad book.

Huh. I really enjoyed how it ended. And I'm not one who generally likes long-winded, rambling, or unfocused writing. I guess you and I have different tastes about pieces of art we consume for pleasure and diversion, so…FUCK YOU!

I think Kid Cudi's feelings are hurt that he wasn't invited to this party.

I'm not a big book fan, but this Dan Brown guy is one of the good ones.

I disagree a lot. I love W-UB, start to finish. It's among the best presentations of the process of grief I've encountered.

Ratner's become self-aware!
