Agreed.  I feel like if you don't know anything about Lovecraft then you are sort of missing out on half the fun, maybe?  And I'm not sure how many ppl do.

Most of these books dealt with the supernatural on some sort of surface level only to have it explained away later, right?  But then there was one, much later in the series, that had to do with astral projection —- and that one really freaked me out.

"boy scout-ish" is a great way to put it.  also, the three investigators skewed more toward the fantastic and the occult, is how i saw it, and that's what drew me in at that age.

Though I don't necessarily agree with this viewpoint, I can understand if you find the pea soup stuff to be silly because the fx take you out of the scene or whatever.  But the first hour of that movie is pure build-up, expertly-done imo, and I wish more movies were made this way today.

I remember reading the Alien novelization back when I was in high school.  I'd already seen Scott's movie and loved it and knew every plot point.  Still, that didn't stop me from getting tremendously freaked out as I read that book.  And I have to say that, while I love reading/watching horror, I don't typically ever

I loved the Three Investigators books when I was a kid.  I'm pretty sure I read every single title in that series that my library had at least thrice over.  Strangely enough, I never read Hardy Boys.  Did I miss out???

Thanks, @avclub-8d21481602b5ba3b34a3b6861dbde2e1:disqus , for this article.  I had never seen the show prior to your posting this most persuasive bit of writing.  I'm now halfway through S2 (just finished the Dinner Party episode as of a few minutes ago) and HOT DAMN I can't believe something this good is on the CW.

Wilson Rawl's Where the Red Fern Grows pretty much wrecked me as a third grader.

I read the Prydain Chronicles many times over as a kid.  Not enough ppl know about them, they are so good.  I bought copies just a few years back and they held up really really well for me.  Definitely worth revisiting.
