I would contend that it depends on the source of the petition. Change.org seems to get some responses where people's minds have been changed, especially when it comes to corporations doing shitty things and being called out on it.

Well, I would argue that our calendar is more accurate, only having to substitute a day in every four years, instead of a full 30-day month every two or three years. (Plus the odd extra second on New Years' every once in a while.)
