The books get far less straightforward as they go, and by the end of the third I really loved it.  Maybe not TOO dark, but pretty anti-typical of YA stuff.

Alternative opinion: I was totally bored by The Golden Compass and didn't continue the trilogy.  I saw the movie when it came out, and it wasn't great, and it didn't seem to me that the book was much better.  I realize that Lyra is just a young girl, but for most of the book it seemed that she was just watching things…

Sounds like you should just read the novel and ignore that movie, as it has little to do with the book besides the name.

The first two or three times I read LOTR, I stalled at the beginning of Return of the King.  Around the time where all of the armies are coming to Minas Tirith.
