I don't know.  I kind of liked the first half.

I think both therationalist and Goforius makes  good points.  Burroughs does create a pretty clear dichotomy between "noble savage" warrior tribes and those that practice cannibalism who've been tainted by their enslavement by whites.

Phelps actually was the first name mentioned back in August when Warner Bros. announced they were close to naming a director.

Yep, it's a really exciting story, and Tarzan isn't the monosyballic simpleton he's typically portrayed as in a lot of the movies.  Burroughs stresses his curiousity and intellect as much as his physical prowess as factors in his survival.

Not really random.  Tarzan has something of a blood feud going with the cannibal tribe that killed his ape foster mother, to which the man whose clothes he steals belongs.  I'm not saying it's pretty—he's a pretty ruthless character in that first book, but the killing isn't entirely without motivation.  And the

I really like him in "Mohicans" too, though, as some of Means' fellow activists have pointed out, there's a certain irony in a man like him playing the original "faithful Indian sidekick."

@Novaline:disqus : If you don't already have it, I heartily recommend the DVD of Rikki-Tikki, which also contains Jones's adaptation of "Mowgli's Brothers." I enjoy it much more than the Disney version.  They both have pretty good animation for 70s era made for TV cartoons, and they're very faithful to Kipling.

I think you can safely dive into the Hobbit with a 7 or 8 year old.  I read it to my daughter when she was 4, maybe younger, and she loved it.  She's one of those kids who has always loved scary stuff.  We read Coraline when she was 5, which she loved more than anything, and a year later we saw the movie.  She was
