I like how people interpret the characters' motivations through their own moral lens, assuming that of course, eventually the heroes would side with their POV.

I think the implication is, and this is somewhat developed later, that these were people who wanted to leave the post-scarcity paradise of the Federation and rough it by building colonies on distant planets.  Probably Montana militia types.
