Probably because the show had no rules. Other than leaving viewers with a (mostly meaningless) reason to tune in next week, of course.

It seemed to be written as it was shot. Whole sub-plots were discarded, pieces of information made irrelevant, characters added willy-nilly, etc. 

I didn't read that one. Why would anyone want to read about corn grown on an Italian island?

Tropic of Cancer was fucking bullshit though. It turns out, no one had cancer in the first place!

Absolutely. I usually have no problems with changing the rules of the universe created in a work of art at a whim, but Lost took it too far. Plus the acting was all sucky.

However, the case can be made that no one in the movie was 'actually' dreaming, instead the characters were under the sway of carefully, deliberately constructed dreams made for a specific goal (which can't be said for any of my "actual" dreams.)
