It's the line that finally broke the ice for me. I listened to this record four times in a row before I finally got it, and that line just cut me to the core. I was in tears by the end.
They're a fucking phenomenal live band. There was a moment during "Snow Song" where the horn section vamped on a slow chord progression, and a shiver ran through the crowd. Everyone went silent. It was maybe the most holy experience I've ever had at a show.
This is a great point and absolutely true. Much of the obsession with this record (beyond the record itself) lay in people's craving something more.
Oh, god, the Rate Your Music cult of In Absentia back in the day was insufferable. And the melodies on Aeroplane are gorgeous. But to each his own. I really like Porcupine Tree's collaboration with Yoko Ono.
