And then it occurred to me that the actual best score of the year wasn't even nominated, nor was its attendant film applauded for its jaw-droppingly gorgeous cinematography, nor was Essie Davis heralded for her scorching performance in The Babadook, and then the sinking reminder that the Academy has zero interest in…
Of course, a Spotlight win was just what the A.V. Club wanted, as now they can prattle on forever about what REALLY should have won, you guys.
Overly. By far. It's a well-made action flick. Nothing more.
Eh, the pacing is debatable. It covered a huge amount of ground in a relatively short period of time, but I feel like everyone pulled their weight in a cast that offered an embarrassment of riches. Airtight scripting, too.
Can you explain to me the adoration behind Fury Road? It's ubiquitous around here, but I honest to god seriously don't get it. It's a fine enough action film, lovely cinematography, and just thematically nebulous enough to invite any number of readings. But for fuck's sake, it's a two-hour car chase with next to zero…
Yeah, by far the best score, and gorgeous cinematography to boot. Alas, the scares don't hold up as well through subsequent viewings, but the core concept alone is so fucking strong as to guarantee its timelessness.
I was all set to upvote your Fury Road dis, but then you kept talking.
Oh, it already has.
Have you missed everything else they've posted in the last year?
So I'm on the polar opposite end of the spectrum regarding Fury Road (and have taken all my lashes for it here already, thanks), but I'm astounded that anyone would find Spotlight anything less than the absorbing, riveting, thrilling Best Picture-deserving masterpiece that it is. Yours is the first outright negative…
I prefer my jokes from Ray Romano, or, if he's unavailable, Kevin James.
"As expected, Spotlight wins Original Screenplay. It's not the best film of the year"
We've all seen Pet Sematary.
Fargo's phenomenal. Absolutely brilliant. One of the greatest single seasons I've ever seen; it's astounding what they were able to cram into ten episodes.
The Catcher in the Rye appreciation thread is down the hall.
I honest to god don't get the hype. At all. I saw it. It was fine. Two hours and a few bucks later, my mouth had a stale popcorn aftertaste and my head was still intact, and my friend and I drove back to his house and had dinner and moved on with our fucking lives.
Then I stepped on the cat and started crying and I locked myself in the bathroom and my friends tried to coax me out but they couldn't.
I love my woman-suit made out of human skin, too, but I take it out of my mouth every once in a while.
