I don't buy the parody angle that much.   They also did "A Passion Play" as a single song album.  I remember reading an interview with Anderson when they band went back to shorter songs with "War Child" and he was very proud of his long form albums.

I saw them back in the 70's and they were one of the best live acts of all time.   I went to every tour from "Songs from the Wood" to "A" and they were great every time.
