I carefully re watched the scene where the Rubik's cube first appeared in this episode. If you look carefully you can see the Rubik's cube is ALREADY THERE before they arrive at the lobby. The Doctor just picks it up off the reception desk. Somehow that's creepier.

I understand that hole in my theory but perhaps that River is from a different timeline.

Theory about the astronaut
The astronaut that emerges from the lake is River Song. This is the first time she meets the Doctor/River is also the little girl calling for help(though I don't feel as sure about this last bit). Their perspective timelines are running in reverse (as River states later in the episode). The…
