Notwithstanding Kevin Costner's cringe-worthy Massachusetts "accent" (if one can call it that), I thought Thirteen Days did a pretty decent job with the subject. The Missiles Of October is a classic too, although I've only seen parts of it myself.

Completely agree. I remember there was also a sense, which lasted right to the Berlin Wall coming down, that the Soviets knew their days were numbered and that there was this fear that they would get desperate and frustrated and do something stupid/terrifying.

That one was the new Vulcan science officer sounds familiar - actually I thought (or maybe imagined) that was mentioned elsewhere in the movie. But I hadn't heard about the Kirk's lover/Starfleet officer - interesting.
