I think it's actually pretty awesome that he's mixing A-list stars with some rarely-seen political names - it shows he may be keeping a bit of Colbert Show/Daily Show flavor rather than just doing the late night talk show thing.
You mentioned Rebecca on Cheers but didn't mention Woody? Filling beloved Nick Colasanto's shoes was a nigh-impossible task, but Woody Harrelson did such an amazing job, it lessened the pain of his loss considerably and quite possibly saved the show a year before Kirstie came along.

Chevy actually had a couple of good one-liners, amazingly, and Ted Knight managed to compliment his "fine fellow comedians" without shooting lasers from his eyes. After reaching my endurance limit (~45 secs), I don't think this can be definitively called "improv comedy" when it's basically just a single "joke" stretched out over 60 minutes. Plus as to his stated intentions, I'm pretty sure Ted Danson is doing just fine getting work by himself these days.
