Possibly, but his hot assistant (or whoever assisted HER) read the code and recognized the algorithm's potential, so ostensibly he has devs on staff already. But whatever, if we have to scrutinize the plot THIS much then perhaps it is not as thin as I first thought. :-)

A bigger problem than the legal question is the fact that the show went out of its way to explain that Hooli engineers were going to decompile and reverse engineer the compression algorithm used in Pied Piper, which is silly because it was already established that the source code was on Github.

Redemption is for the self.  I don't think Walt did that for himself, I think he did it for Skyler.  Which may, in fact, have redeemed him…. but that doesn't mean he "cared about redemption."  It means he cared about Skyler hearing the truth.
