You lost me at "the entire show has adopted these qualities." The giant majority of all new episodes DO pontificate and moralize to an extent by show's end, with the exception of 4 or 5 stragglers per season - a ratio that has been going on for at least 15 years. I've been watching since 1992 at the age of nine, and, barring a couple year gap in the 2000s, have watched it religiously since 2007 and don't really feel like anything's truly disappointed my appointment viewing, save for a few clunkers

I saw The Front a few weeks back on TCM and was nearly shocked at how much I enjoyed it - need to bone up on more Ritt - my gf has a copy of Hud and I also want to check out stuff like Sounder and Norma Rae
