So there's authentic Newfoundland accents to be heard in that film. Although, now, the other thing is that there isn't just ONE Newfoundland accent any more than there's one

Well, Gordon Pinsent did one. Judi Dench sounded so much like a Newfoundland actress and writer - Janis Spence - that I figured she'd probably used her recordings as research. Scott Glenn and Julianne Moore were from God knows where, though.

I felt, as a Newfoundlander, that I should take umbrage and cite numerous beautiful locales in our fair province. But I've seen the Shipping News and it does look dreary in that film.

I've had it twice in restaurants, but only as part of a charcuterie platter. So it was: "This is venison sausage and this is bison oh, and this right here is horse…" Once as a very thin prosciutto-like slice and once as a softer spicy sausage. I think I'm ready to try a full-on steak. Because it was delicious.

That's where I saw 'Hard Boiled' and 'Naked', both in 1994. And for cheap. And you could have a beer. Lovely.

I wasn't there, but I doubt it. Toronto audiences are unfailingly appreciative. Berlin and Cannes, on the other hand, that's where you'll get the enthusiastic booing. (which is also appreciative, in a way…)

I took in 'Midnight's Children', which I thought was gorgeous, moving and funny. The reviews seem to be of the 'they tried to cram too much stuff in' variety, but I was thinking while watching it that this seemed to be one of those long, episodic, leaning-on-a-lot-of-narration novel adaptations that actually worked

@avclub-c64f6e326ddf58b2bc9a198ed8f87dd2:disqus There's definitely intentional humor. It's all quite droll, really. And more than a bit surreal. It wasn't what I was expecting, but no I wouldn't say it was bad-good.

short answer: both more stylized and way funnier than I thought it would be.
