I'm not sure but they were never called "zombies" in the Romero films. A point remarked upon in Shaun of the Dead where a character calls them zombies and then was told not to use the "z" word.

"Ironically, Romero, whose name has become so closely associated with the Steel City, was born and raised in the Bronx."
