Yes, but is it sadder than the elephant in the zoo in South Korea (?) that learned to mimic human sounds to bond with its trainer because it's lonely?  It's probably because I just read The Magician's Elephant recently, but that really made me sad.  Elephants should never be so lonely that they want to die.
