It had never even occurred to me that I have never heard of a female actor being method, and certainly not being praised for it, and I am sure that is exactly the reason why.

Insofar as it has worked, there are lots of stories of those people being insufferable assholes to be around during the entire shooting process, especially Day-Lewis, given some of the less-than-savory characters he's portrayed.
