I think the books were split in two for overseas readers due to their size. That's all I can think of that would explain it.

GRRM has said that Maurice Druon's The Accursed Kings series (also 7 books) was a direct influence on A Song of Ice and Fire. Some of them have recently been republished after going out of print a while back. So, yeah. Check those out, maybe.
