Yeah, Amputechture is actually my favorite Mars Volta album (I am apparently one of their only fans that is also a regular reader of this site).  I've never really understood why most people seem to think that the later Mars Volta albums are any more difficult than their early stuff…they were pretty consistently weird…

Lumpy Gravy came really close to making my list (and might have if I'd made it 5 minutes earlier or 5 minutes later), as did Ship Arriving To Late To Save A Drowning Witch and The Yellow Shark…I don't think there's anyone besides Zappa who has this many great albums.
