I think Borges's work is beautiful in Spanish, but unless I'm wrong, he was very enthusiastic about his English translations, so don't feel too bad about not reading his stuff in the original language.  :)

The only other Yancey book I've read is The Monstrumologist and it was fucking awesome and totally gory.  I don't think this newest title is really my thing, but I do think he's a decent writer.

YES to everything you said.  Dread is exactly the word missing from these conversations.  That opening sequence was a slamdunk because we felt the dread of something horrible about to happen.

Aw, I had plenty crushes on cartoon characters, they just weren't my first crushes. I liked Gambit in the original X-Men cartoon and Terry McGinnis on Batman Beyond.
