This was well outside my viewing habits at the time - I checked out a few early episodes a few years ago and came away with much the same impression, that its once-controversial status was more interesting than the actual content of the show.

I remember Roger Ebert being quite impressed with that, he totally wanted one.

I read On A Pale Horse in junior high and it made a great impression, but I'm scared to revisit it now.

I recall Psycho II being not bad, though it retconned Norman and Mother's relationship something terrible. And I think Psycho III retconned the retcon.
