I think the plot just demanded an expedient way to get Nucky into the house to talk with Gillian and meet Gyp's Judas. Also, the writers have gone out of their way to demonstrate how the war has been a leveling experience for Nucky—down to his escape, his dealings with Chalky, and his fixing (and even driving!) a car.
