Agreed on the long game theory. In fact, I think the "out of character" bit that Moffat alluded to was that Sherlock fell hook, line, and sinker into Moriarty's trap and appeared to be completely beat and facing imminent death.

I was thinking of this earlier, too. If Sherlock planned on faking his death, but did not account for Moriarty to commit suicide, then his plan must have assumed that Moriarty would be watching.
