I see your point on Promise, though I tend to forgive her daughter's vocal affectations because she is 13. Her vocals are pretty sophisticated and smooth for someone so young. The R&Bisms were subtle enough to me that it didn't really interfere with my enjoyment.
On your second point, I think it depends on the region. Housing costs are really high in my city so I know plenty of people in their 30s who live with housemates and not just partners.
