Really?  I kind of saw it as just the opposite.  Korra gave him more than he could normally handle, so he had to break out his super-secret special technique that he doesn't want anybody to know about.  Korra stomping down and leaving an impression in the ground after knocking Tarrlok off the ledge?  Super bad-ass.

I like how the (awesome) behavior of the airbender children is a reflection of how Tenzin has raised them.  It makes me appreciate his character even more.
