But that's the character wearing yellowface. It's not the actor wearing yellowface to play an Asian character.

The character in Tropic Thunder was white. The character was wearing blackface because he was a horrible person. The character wasn't meant to be black.

Would a 16 year old trans boy really want to play himself pre transition? And are there any 16 year old trans boys whose acting is good enough for a movie like this (I mean they're probably pretty busy with transitioning and haven't had a lot of time to act.)
