I think their was a lot more potential to Xander and his drinking may have prevented them from giving him too much heavy lifting. I also think Marti as show runner probably had less of a feel and interest for the male characters.

I think Gunn in season 5 is the most interesting he ever was. He is both the poorest fit in WR&H but also the keenest to sell himself out. Plus J was much better at playing those conflicts then he ever was at being a street tough.
