The thing is, OTGAP bends over backwards to incorporate details that suggest the 1939 movie without overstepping legally (b&w prologue w/ "and-you-were-there" casting, flying baboons), when it would have been easier (and to me more original and entertaining) to adapt any of the non-contested elements from Baum's books.

RETURN didn't make the comparison-to-1939 issue any easier for itself, invoking that film with ruby (instead of silver) slippers and 'and-you-were-there' dual-role casting, not to mention its blatant positioning as a sequel.
No personal offense intended but it drives me flippin CRAZY when people describe the 1939 MGM musical as "the original". It takes huge liberties with the book(s) and it wasn't even the first Oz film.
