I think the idea with Ellen is that she's so consumed with simulating emotion effectively onstage that she's forgotten how to actually HAVE an emotion. She can't not *act* the moments in her life where emotion is called for.

I see where you're coming from, and it occurs to me that both roles are caricatures. So the question is: are there any *real* women in TOOTSIE?
I wouldn't say she *stinks*, but it's odd to see her in a comedy— she's always favored serious material and I suspect would much preferred to have won for FRANCES. She works in TOOTSIE because Julie needs to have real vulnerability, and real sadness, for the emotional beats to land.
You underestimate how many people here have actually seen some of these films.
