Upvoted for pointing out that the loss of tolerance is what gets people. In fact, it's almost always three things 1) loss of tolerance 2) combination with other depressants, like booze or pills and 3) the fact that one never knows what strength of dope they're actually taking

Heroin and opiates in general are a little different, because even if you're not predisposed to psychological addiction they rather quickly cause intense physical addiction which works pretty uniformly for everybody.
