Very similar to record chains in the 80s. It was obvious the record companies were throwing everything against the wall to see what would stick, as they had no clue. At the retail level, it got even worse. The re-categorization of artists killed me. DM would come in and insist that The Cars belonged in 'New…
Blockbuster! Now Better Than Nothing!
Kind of explains their demise. My local indie store in a pretty small city in Ontario, Canada put the 4 Blockbusters in town to shame.
I really can't argue. It was a good film, but unnecessary. I'm one of those old-school guys who will rarely go to a movie whose title ends with an integer, i.e. a sequel. Granted, it was bigger and deeper than it's predecessor, but 'deeper' is absoloutely antithetical to the spirit of the original.
Hanna-Barbera lawyers currently putting lawsuit together to force mighty to pay for use of exit stage left.
There's the generation gap for you. All my friends wanted congress with Betty Rubble. Wilma wasn't even in the running.
Compared to it's contemporaries like Hanna-Barbera, the only other game in town on TV, the bar was set fairly low.
Besides, when I was a kid, I always thought Hanna and Barbera were a couple of teenaged girls. Jay Ward on the other hand, I considered a genius.
Are they friendly spirits? Oh damn, wrong reply…..
What I want to know is 'who asked for this???' Nobody who loved the original wants this crap, and anyone else either doesn't care or is too young. What goddam cereal do I buy to get the 'free Hollywood job' prize? That's gotta be how it works!
I'll be holding out for Clyde Crashcup and Leonardo.
The opening shots in 'Melancholia' immediately brought Marienbad to mind for me, and set the mood appropriately. The ornately cultivated gardens were practically art-direction theft.
First time round, invited 250, got 240. Second time around, invited 36, got 36! It was a lot more fun.
The Apartment! Excellent!
Thanks for going to the trouble to put all that in. ElDan had me scrambling for my copy until I scrolled down.
I can't give enough upvotes. Spacist. Ha! I don't care if you said it 2 days ago, I'm like one of those goddamned 3-toed sloth things. It takes me a week to wipe a gnat out of the corner of my eye.
You know, A New Hope was fun because it harkened back to the the serials of the 30s and 40s. I loved the sliding cut-aways, The iris opening/closing scenes… all that old stuff. The story itself was passibly 'B'. All-in-all, a whole lot of fun. Why Lucas and Co. decided to stick their heads so far up their own…
Shouldn't we have a completely separate thread, or possibly whole new website to discuss the various permutations of Vader's NOOOO? I know all my friends over 9 are uber-anxious.
Beyond the Hills is another exceptional film. It again explores the co-dependent relationship of two young women, but in a very different context. What I liked most about it was it's complete lack of judgement, and believe me, there's lots in the main players to be judged. Based on these two films, Mungiu's future…
Regardless of the politicization of the process, the jury made the right decision.
Most definitely!
