I work for a non-profit which is funded by an order of nuns and deal with them both professionally and socially all the time…I have rarely felt uncomfortable around them and the only way I ever feel the need to censor myself is taking the Lord's name in vain kind of stuff. Most of my staff is homeless/mentally ill

Yeah, we need one more person making the same Community and Simpsons jokes. Stop squandering your talents.

I'm from Connecticut and in the big cities you'd think segregation was enforced by law, it's so neatly divided. I have family in the Carolinas and Texas and visit often enough…based on what I've seen, the real difference is that racists in the North are in denial and absolutely don't openly discuss it. I don't  care

2/10. You lost everyone with the Eagles claim. Went too far.

@avclub-6306191656d4dbe2a412a4f248a3793f:disqus Well, can you blame me? Every time I stop assuming the worst of people some guy on the internet starts accusing me of subscribing to bizarre viewpoints and my guard goes right back up.

@avclub-6306191656d4dbe2a412a4f248a3793f:disqus A third possibility is that you have no clue what the fuck you're talking about and are filling the gaps with bizarre assumptions. I would say I agree with Dan Savage about 50% of the time on a good day. I'm not sure if he even has the same viewpoint as me regarding this

I don't totally hate the do-gooder aspect of his character. It's an interesting contrast to have someone who deals in moral absolutes and is more concerned with honor than personal gain. I think the early story where he's a whistle blower is as compelling as his struggle with his sexual orientation. But the two

Amazon Prime too, I just shotgunned the whole thing.

As far as the Skyler thing goes, I think the hate on her is even less deserved. She was at her worst when the series began and Walt was essentially innocent. She is complicit in his criminality for sure, but he really is an asshole who has recklessly endangered everyone around him with no good reason at this point in

I think her character is a pretty awful person, but that's totally independent of Vic, who was certainly worse. I actually found both to be really unlikable, but that doesn't make them bad characters or affect my enjoyment of the show really. They were both right about each other while oblivious to their own flaws.

@avclub-6306191656d4dbe2a412a4f248a3793f:disqus I'm not saying the emotion itself is invalid. I'm saying expecting anyone other than yourself or your loved ones to give a shit about your emotions is unrealistic.

@avclub-6306191656d4dbe2a412a4f248a3793f:disqus Do you think high school bullies really bother to discern any of that? Queer is queer in high school. You get labelled gay and they beat the crap out of you and nobody gives a shit about the finer points of your sexual orientation.

@avclub-228ebc0df5ea0340c2f5558d368bdea5:disqus That is really well-said. It's kind of infuriating how the the whole subject has been hijacked by a bunch of grad students who want to have an intellectual circle jerk. I've seen people who consider themselves "activists" devote weeks to talking shit about the Equal

@avclub-6306191656d4dbe2a412a4f248a3793f:disqus Why the fuck does any one think they have some God-given right to not be offended? I'm a chef and I'm offended when people put ketchup on food which is not french fries, or when people confuse Olive Garden with Italian food. Does that give me the right to police people's

@avclub-a6d32f387e4494f11c415971d6cdc15d:disqus I think the bulk of Kathleen Hannah's music has aged really remarkably well. I find myself listening to it still with fair frequency considering how far removed I am from the politics now as a grumpy old man. I can't say the same thing about many musicians I got into

I guess that's progress….I remember when Bikini Kill was still active and you definitely heard more about scene politics and arguments they had with other bands and zines than you heard about their music. They were my first punk show and I remember the place was packed, like wall-to-wall, and at least half the people

This song is a response to a NOFX song, right?

I have the impression that Eisley is just looking for comforts and luxuries above their level of success.  Sure, it's fun to think of having those things, but they're not necessary to actually tour.

This is well-put. I think there's a difference between deliberately sneaking a message into a work of fiction with the explicit intention of converting people, and allowing a worldview which someone else might not share to inform something you've written. Narnia's connection to Christianity is pretty explicit, and

@avclub-4c37107b9dedb73b90f677930bf7728b:disqus I think Pullman's trilogy definitely got preachier as it went on, and suffered for it. I am not an Atheist personally, but didn't find the humanist undertones of the book particularly offensive so much as the heavy-handedness of it. It also helps in the earlier books
