I always thought Ozai banished her because of the actual crime of killing Azulon, making her a scapegoat that leaves him completely "innocent" and demonstrating on how he just uses people no matter who they are.

i think it's because when the characters are featured alone, we realize how much we care about them apart from the main timelines.
it's a mark of a great show.
