It feels odd pointing out Mackenzie's lack of agency in taking her new job as a shot at the show and then completely ignoring how explicitly Maggie exercises her own agency in turning down what Jim assumes is a better job to instead pursue the job she wants.

While the "why" of the murder isn't really discussed, that doesn't make it all that irrational.
